Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have paid their respects following the death of club legend Joey Jones.

  WHAT HAPPENED?

  Wrexham announced on Tuesday that Jones has sadly passed away at the age of 70. The former defender enjoyed three spells at Wrexham, won the Welsh League Cup and played almost 500 times for the club. Jones was fondly known as 'Mr Wrexham' due to his long association with the club and tributes have been flooding in since the sad news emerged.

• REYNOLDS AND MCELHENNEY PAY TRIBUTE

  McElhenney posted a message in response to the news on X, writing: "Love to you Mickey Thomas and the entire Jones family. Sir Joey is a legend that will never be forgotten."

  Another message followed from Reynolds. He posted on Instagram: "I’m really glad I got to spend time with you… Thanks for the stories. Condolences to his family, friends and Mickey. Rest up, Joey. Big second half coming up."

• MORE MESSAGES FLOOD IN

  More tributes have arrived for Jones. The Football Association of Wales described him as an iconic figure and added: "Despite his humble nature off the field, Jones will go down in history as one of the best defenders of his generation for what he achieved with Liverpool, but it was his dedication to the game, his no-nonsense style and his genuine love for the clubs that he represented that will forever endear him to the fans, and how they appreciated that he was so much like them with his desire just to play football."

  Former Wales goalkeeper Neville Southall posted on social media: "A Welsh legend and a good friend. God obviously needs a left-back. He's got a great one now."

  And former Wrexham team-mate Dixie McNeil, said: "It's tragic, he was a super lad and a super player. He didn't give you 70 percent or 80 percent, he gave you 110 percent every game and he was a team player on top of that. He was a great professional footballer, you won't better him in that sense. He had everything you wanted from a player."

  WREXHAM PLAN STATUE

  Wrexham have also announced plans to erect a statute to commemorate Jones in the public plaza outside the new Kop Stand at the club's STōK Cae Ras stadium.
